The “Too many Indian doctors in South Africa” statement made by Minister Yunus Carrim in a local newspaper refers. Who are we to decide on the passion taken by students? Who are we to decide to stop Indian students in making a choice of their studies.

To my knowledge there is a dire shortage of doctors in South Africa. Children of Indian origin who have the passion in studying towards medicine may now be demotivated, which will come to a huge shortage of doctors and may cause health institutes and hospitals to be overcrowded with people needing medical care. I would not have expected this coming from a democratic country and constitution that safe guards our citizens.

The minister should have had the statistics first, to see what the plight of the health industry is. But still, if he did make that statement – that is racism. Please let us stop the brain drain and let us enhance the gross national product in this county. Let the youth feel that there is a future in our beloved county. The focus in South African should be on addressing the shortage of doctors.

To my knowledge, Indian doctors service all race groups.Mr Minister, you said a professor, told you, that if you look at the number of doctors to the size of the population, Indian South Africans has the highest number. That was six or seven years ago. Our beloved country is in dire need of hospitals, clinics and medical care.
