Saturday 2 November: Pigeon Valley
Meet at Stella Sports Club on Helen Joseph Road (was Davenport Road) at 1.45pm. There will be some street walking to Pigeon Valley, with some steep hills going up to St Augustine’s Hospital and the university. Persons wanting to do a shorter hike can meet at 2.45pm at the entrance of Pigeon Valley (Princess Alice Ave). The hike leader will be Linda. Contact her on 083 353 8319.
Sunday 3 November: Mt Edgecombe Meander
Hikers can meet and park at Spar, Flanders Drive, uMhlanga at 8am for a circular hike through cane, across grassland and around Marshall Dam. The hike rating is strenuous (teep in parts) and the distance is 18km. The hike leader is Jenny. Contact her on 084 952 0622.
Sunday 10 November: Alverstone and surrounds
Sunday hikers host Saturday folk. Meet at Union Main Centre, Old Main Road, Pinetown in time for a prompt 8am departure (be aware of one-way system for access). The hike is over rolling hills and through indigenous bush. Game viewing is guaranteed. There will be petrol-sharing at R20 a person. The hike leader is Jon. Contact 082 459 1522.
Saturday 16 November: Hillcrest
Meet at the Keg, Heritage Market at 1.45pm. The hike goes down to the valley below, small stream crossing, some wooded areas, sugar cane and open areas. Meet back at the Keg for drinks afterwards. There is no short hike option. The hike leader is Werner. Contact 084 206 7836.
Sunday 17 November: Plantations and railways, Pietermaritzburg
Meet at Union Main Centre, Old Main Road, Pinetown, in time for a prompt 7.30am departure, or outside Botanic Gardens, Mayor’s Walk, Pietermaritzburg at 8.30am for 8.45am. Hikers will travel up Zwartkop Road to Boughton Station and go on a hike that touches old and present railway lines, the new tunnel under Hilton and an old historic tunnel near World’s View. There will be petrol-sharing at R40 a person. The hike leader is Francois Marais 083 983 8007.
Saturday 23 November: Alverstone
This hike is a grasslands, up and down hike, with some game viewing. Entrance is R15. Meet at Assagay Hotel at 1.45pm, then drive through to Alverston. After the hike there will be a braai at the Boma. The hike leader is Trevor. Contact 079 525 9230.
Sunday 24 November: Bartlett’s Estate / Assagay Coffee Farm
Meet at Union Main Centre, Old Main Road, Pinetown for an 8am departure (be aware of one-way system for access.) Parking at Assagay Coffee Farm. Hike organisers plan to have coffee and cake after the hike, or pay R10 a person for safe parking. Hike over rolling hills, through cane and grass and enjoy beautiful scenery in the upper Sterkspruit Valley. Petrol-sharing is R25 a person. The hike leader is Jenny. Contact 084 952 0622.
Saturday 30 November: Kloof Gorge – escarpment
Hike along the gorge edge to grasslands above, with stunning views. Meet at the Krantzkloof picnic site at 1.45pm to leave at 2pm. The entrance is in Krantzkloof Road and entry is R20 a person.
