Prost to top bierfest

IT'S time to bust out the Bavarian brews, bratwurst and lederhosen because Tops at Spar Bierfest is back bigger than before.

Modelled on Munich’s world famous Oktoberfest, Tops at Spar Bierfest recreates the revellery, tradition, and of course the beer, of Bavarian beer festivals of old. The Bierfest is from 12 to 15 September at Suncoast.

Founding partner South African Breweries, have again called on their master brewers to craft three limited edition Bavarian-styled beers. Beers include the popular Royal Bavaria Oktoberfest Bier, the traditional Krystal Weiss Protea Edelweiss and the speciality dark ale, the King Ludwig Munich Dunkel.

Master Brewers will be located on-site for tasting and beer education at Bierfest’s ‘Braumeister Ecke’, aka, Brewmasters Corner.

The Bierfest is hosted inside a 2,500-seater Bavarian Brauhaus festooned with Bavarian décor from the motherland. Revelers will be served in traditional style by costumed frauleins bearing fistfuls of frothing beer steins to wash down mouth watering Bavarian food including pork knuckle (eisbein), german sausages, pickles, pretzels and sauerkraut.

Adding to the festive vibe, a world class entertainment programme, including an authentic oompah band.

“TOPS at SPAR is proud to headline the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest, South Africa’s largest beer festival. It also tries to tackle the serious issue of drinking and driving through its newly launched DRYVER app, which fits perfectly with the festivals Cheers. No Gears! Campaign”, said TOPS Group Liquor Manager, Mark Robinson. It provides Bierfest patrons with a range of safe and affordable choices to drink responsibly and get home safely; from rehydration stations and a designated driver rewards programme to Good Fellas memberships and preferred rates with Mozzie Cabs.

Cheers NO Gears! is officially endorsed by the Industry Association for Responsible Alcohol Use (the ARA). Visit www.bierfest.co.za/noregrets for more info.

A smorgasbord of traditional Oktoberfest challenges will be on offer to test your strength and skill including the launch of Bierfest’s official sport, Beer Pong! Be sure to dress up in your dirndl (durn-dell) and lederhosen because there will be competitions for the best dressed King Ludwig and Princess Therese at every show, with fantastic prizes to be won.

There are two ticket options available. Standard ‘Bier Hall’ tickets are R100 each and the R150 ‘Über Bier Hall’ tickets.

The event is not open to anyone under the age of 18.
