Black smoke prompts evacuation at Super SPAR on Beyers Naude Drive

Emergency crews respond after black smoke seen at Super SPAR; store evacuated.

Shoppers and staff were evacuated from the Super SPAR on Beyers Naude Drive on March 9 after thick black smoke was seen rising from the store.

The supermarket, located opposite JHB Surgical Hospital, was cleared as a precaution while emergency services responded to the scene. Early indications suggest the smoke may have been caused by an oil fire inside the premises, according to Mahmood Bhaai Cassim, who serves on the Johannesburg District Community Police Board and is part of Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative (VCSI).
