uMzinyathi District Municipality ‘boasts’ funded budget for second consecutive year

uMzinyathi has secured a funded budget for a second year as leaders target stronger financial governance.

The uMzinyathi District Municipality has secured a funded budget for the second consecutive financial year, marking another milestone in its efforts to strengthen financial management and governance.

The achievement comes under the leadership of Mayor Councillor Thembisile Mchunu, who identified financial stability and improved audit outcomes as key priorities when taking office.

Focus shifts to audit outcomes

Mayor Mchunu welcomed the achievement, saying the municipality had successfully maintained the progress made during the previous financial year.

“I am pleased that after achieving a funded budget last year, we have managed to maintain that status again this year. Our next priority is to work closely with the Auditor-General to achieve an unqualified audit opinion. I also wish to thank Municipal Manager ‘MV’ Ntanzi for strengthening our financial controls,” said Mchunu.

The uMzinyathi District Municipality received an adverse audit opinion from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) for the most recently completed financial year (2023/2024)

An official audit opinion for the 2025/2026 financial year has not yet been issued, as the 2025/2026 fiscal cycle only concluded on June 30, 2026. Municipal financial statements for this period are currently being prepared for submission, with the formal auditing process by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) scheduled to take place over the coming months.

Municipal Manager Mlungisi ‘MV’ Ntanzi thanked the municipality’s heads of department and their teams for their commitment to improving service delivery, strengthening financial management and promoting good governance.

He said the collective effort of municipal staff had played an important role in ensuring the municipality remained on a sound financial footing while continuing to improve governance standards.
