Equestrain enthusiasts pick up the pace
Western Games is a fast growing sport in the South African equestrian world

An informal training show on Western Games was held at Newcastle Equestrian Club last Saturday morning.
According to Lydia Bruin, a member of the club, Western Games is a fast growing sport in the South African equestrian world. “We are trying to get more people interested in the games and form a club in Newcastle, as the closest Western Games club is in Howick. That is too far for locals to travel up and down,” said Mrs Bruin.
Western Games involve teaching horses and riders various disciplines necessary for tournaments where horses are judged on discipline and their performance on the track. “These events are timed with computerised timers and competitors have to finish as fast possible,” Mrs Bruin explained.
Out of the 13 different divisions in Western Games, the day focused on 11. “But if competitors take part in competitions, they are expected to know all 13,” she continued.
