A WIN against Piet Retief last Saturday was exactly what Vryheid Rugby Club needed to secure a semi final on home soil.
Maroon pride did not fail to deliver, as both Vryheid’s first and second teams managed to comfortably snatch victory from their long time rivals and formidable opponents, Piet Retief.
Second team coach, Edwill Meiring described his squad’s match as “high tempo” and commended the team on their performance, saying that this match was a display of the side’s best rugby of the season so far.
Vryheid’s second team scored six tries, while the visiting team only managed to reach the try line three times, leading the host team to a 39 – 20 victory over Piet Retief’s second team.
Pienaar Breytenbach took Man of the Match for the backs and JB Khulu was Man of the Match for the forwards.
“Well done, guys,” said Meiring proudly. “Keep up the good work.”
The first team took to the field, charged with their trademark team spirit and determination, eager to bring the semi finals home to Vryheid.

Khumbulani Khoza and Mornè Ellis put Vryheid on the scoreboard, scoring one try each in the first half, with eighth man, Francois Scheepers converting one of the tries. In the second half, Carl Holzhauzen and Sticks Mbatha were able to add to the score by placing the ball over the try line once each, before Piet Retief managed to penetrate Vryheid’s defence to score a try in the 55th minute of the game, moments after Vryheid’s Anton Van Der Walt was given a yellow card and sent off for ten minutes. Shortly afterward, Jacques Conradie joined his teammate in the sin bin for a similar infringement and Vryheid forged ahead, two players short.
At 76 minutes, Juan Swanepoel scored another try for the hosts, with Pienaar Breytenbach following hot on his heels with another try, converted by Francois Scheepers in the 78th minute. In the final moments of the match, a Piet Retief player was also yellow-carded and sent off the field.
At the final whistle, the score was 34 – 7 in favour of Vryheid. Man of the Match for the forwards was Anton Van Der Walt and Juan Booyens took Man of the Match for the backline.
