Hosted by the South African Cross Country Series (SACCS), this national off-road race attracted more than 500 spectators, some of whom followed the drivers’ and navigators’ progress on both days.

On Friday, the teams participated in a qualifying 60km race.

Saturday was the much-anticipated event where the racers had to complete two loops of 170km.

The journey started in Winterton and followed a trail through Estcourt, Frere and Colenso, before the entrants returned to Winterton.

Saturday’s round two of the Berg 400 has been described as “brutally tough” and local competitor Shaun Braithwaite can testify to this.

“The race was a bit tough, but the drivers enjoyed it thoroughly,” said Mr Braithwaite, whose Tip Top Milk team (navigated by Trace Pricemoor) experienced unfortunate engine troubles and could not complete the race.

Two Estcourt teams comprising Gary and Jess Campbell and Graham Peterson and Alaric Smith successfully completed round two.

On behalf of the Natal Off-Road Club, Mr Braithwaite extends a sincere thank you to the landowners who allowed the use of their property.

“Without them, off-road racing would not be possible,” he said.
