Winston Churchill once described golf as, “A game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.”

Given the passion for the game displayed by locals who frequent Vryheid Country Club, it seems they are perhaps more inclined to heed the words of South African golfing legend Gary Player, who said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get”.
The spectacular greens at the club buzzed with activity on Sunday.
Golfing enthusiasts took in the tranquility of the course as they set about their game, some taking part in competitions and others getting in some practice, beneath beautiful blue skies and in pristine weather conditions.
George Dlamini, Evans Zungu and Mandla Mtshali were among golfers on the course, for the Chicken Run Nine Hole Sunday competition. This competition has a prize of chickens, sponsored by Kobus Mengel.

What is so great about golf?
While sports enthusiasts may disagree, it can be said, as a matter of opinion at least, those who partake in the game of golf enjoy the camaraderie and gentlemanly conduct common to the greens.
Golf also encourages good manners and respect between players, an admirable trait those who practice can be proud of.

Don’t golfers get bored of playing the same course all the time?
No – some say the beauty of the game is that it never remains the same.
No round of golf is exactly the same, due to changes in weather and course conditions, different golfing partners and different approaches to the course. It’s all about being better than your last shot, and there’s always room for improvement.
Another golfing legend, Tiger Woods, once stated: “No matter how good you get, you can always get better and that’s the exciting part.”
