Golf club honours its humble legacy
Club secretary, Dalene Hugo explained the club began in the 70s as a four-hole course, situated on the opposite side of the N11 (the old Kilbarchan Colliery).
Kilbarchan Golf Club celebrated four decades of golfing on Saturday.
A field of 80 golfers competed in the club’s 40th Anniversary IPS Competition, with players teeing off from as early as 7.30am and others opting for a mid-morning tee-off slot.
For the club itself, the day was about honouring its humble roots.
Club secretary, Dalene Hugo explained the club began in the 70s as a four-hole course, situated on the opposite side of the N11 (the old Kilbarchan Colliery).
The course was later bought out by Eskom.
Through a partnership between the power utility, the Kilbarchan Colliery and McAlpine, the foundation was laid for what would become the Kilbarchan Golf Club.
Paul Zietsman was critical to this endeavour.
“We never had a celebration of the establishment of the club, so we decided to host a golfing anniversary celebration instead, in remembrance of when players first teed off.”
Results for the competition are as follows:
In first place was Jan Venter, followed by Gert Lindeque and Dries Els in second and third respectively.
Hannelie le Roux claimed fourth position.
The remainder of the top seven included Heinrich Theunissen, Manie Mostert and Shaun Pillay – congratulations!
