[SEE] Changing lives with the gift of independence

The Gift of the Givers Estcourt branch has once again brought smiles and tears of joy to locals

The Christmas of 2019 will be a memorable one for three individuals. Each of them received a brand new wheelchair, thanks to the Gift of the Givers.

On December 23, Jaaved Khan, local representative of the Gift of the Givers set off to Rosedale where 21-year-old Mthobisi Hadebe was eagerly awaiting his visit.

Mthobisi was born with a disability and the left side of this body is paralysed.

“He always needed someone to carry him if he needed to move around, so we decided to alleviate this,” said Mr Khan.

The young lad was overjoyed when the wheelchair was unpacked and he was placed on it.

The second stop was Ntabamhlophe where 56-year-old Christopher Mazibuko was seated outside, casting glances along the road for the first sign of the special visitor.

“Mr Mazibuko’s leg was amputated last year and ever since his life was not the same. He relied on a wheelchair that he borrowed from someone in the community and if they needed it, he was left without one. His other leg has an infection and he cannot use crutches,” explained Mr Khan.

Thanks to the new wheelchair, Mr Mazibuko has now gained his independence and the joy was visible on his face.

The third and final visit was to the Mnguni household where 26-year-old Snegugu lives with her aunt in Ntabamhlophe. Snegugu is a spirited young woman who was born with a disability and is only able to crawl.

The family was unaware that the Gift of the Givers was making a visit and the perplexed looks on their faces soon turned to delight when they realised what the visit was about. Snegugu could not contain her excitement when the wheelchair was unpacked and she laughed and cried at the same time.

“When I first saw her, I was saddened but when I told them that we had a surprise, her reaction left me speechless. It was an emotional handover and she was overjoyed with her gift,” expressed Mr Khan.
