Louwsburg may seem like a forgotten rural area in terms of development, but many do not know that the amazing soccer talent of Phakamani ‘Phamo’ Mahlambi came from this area… and Louwsburg residents can pride themselves on their “golden boy”.
Mahlambi is currently playing for Mamelodi Sundowns as centre-forward, having joined the ‘Brazilian Boys’ in June 2018. His contract will end in June 2023.
Before joining ‘Downs, he had been playing for an Egyptian team called El Ahly, where he became the very first South African footballer to ever play in Egypt.
The attacking midfielder saw his football career kicking off when he was part of the Transnet School of Excellence from 2011 until 2013, soon joining Bidvest Wits from 2013 until 2015.
Mahlambi can boast about scoring the winning penalty for South Africa Under 23 in the third-place play-off against Rio Olympics hosts Senegal, where he helped the team to qualify for the first time in 15 years.
The decorated player is not just an attacking midfielder; he can also dribble his way around the field as left or right winger.

Mahlambi was not in the starting line-up during a match between the Brazilians and Cape Town City on Monday, where Sundowns lost 3-2. Surprise Ralani scored the first and third goals for CT City, and Kermit Erasmus chipped in the second goal with an assist from Mduduzi Mdantsane just before half-time.
Mamelodi Sundowns are sitting at number two on the PSL log with 46 points, with Orlando Pirates trailing behind in third position with 42 points after a goalless match on Saturday against Bidvest Wits. With Sundowns losing against CT City, Kaizer Chiefs maintained a six-point lead on top of the log with 52 points after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Polokwane City, dampening the spirits of Orlando Pirates supporters who were celebrating Polokwane’s lead at one stage. Soccer fanatics are holding onto their seats as they wait to see who will finally take the PSL 2019/20 season glory on September 5.
