BREAKING: Two critical after ‘stockvel’ truck loses control
I was hoping that this food would see me and my family through the festive season

The Jaws of Life were used to pull out the driver of a Kotoko bakkie that lost control and veered out of the road while travelling from Vryheid to Nquthu laden with stockvel food.
The driver is said to have been overtaking and lost control of the truck due to the heavy load it was carrying.

Some members of the stockvel club who had earlier been patiently waiting at their homes for the arrival of the truck having chipped in monthly for the groceries, now walk about in what remains of the sacks of rice, flour, vegetables and other foods trying to salvage what they can to take home to their families.

Tears stream down the faces of the women as they see their year’s worth of money having gone to waste.
“I don’t know why bad luck keeps following me. I just recently lost my job, the 31st will be my last day and I was hoping that this food would see me and my family through the festive season, as well as the beginning of next year until I find another job. Now this happens,” said Happiness Motloung between sobs.

Traffic officials on scene said that the man who had been driving the truck as well as the woman he had been travelling with were seriously injured when they got to the scene.
The officials said that they were highly grateful to a Dr Barnard from Newcastle who was already trying to help where he could when they arrived on scene.

They were also grateful to another female motorists who stopped and gave the woman in the passengers seat a blanket to cover herself as it started to rain while they waited for paramedics to arrive.
The two were transported to hospital and are said to be in a critical but stable condition.
