A massacre. That’s what farming couple, Philip and Patricia Strauss, are coming to terms with after a pack of vicious hunting dogs savaged 121 sheep early last Thursday.
The killing field that unfolded on their farm, Eersteling at De Jagersdrift, has traumatised the family and put into sharp focus the scourge of hunting dogs and their masters have on the farming industry in the Dundee area.

The Strauss children each have 50 ewes and each lost 19 animals. Many of the ewes were pregnant – some had small lambs still suckling. Others were orphaned.
The Strauss family believes that more must be done to control illegal hunting. “What has happened makes the use of hunting dogs even more unacceptable. These dogs frequently go off hunting on their own without their masters – and this is the result.”
A charge has been laid with the police and an investigation is continuing.
