More than 50 head of livestock were recovered during a largescale stock theft operation in September.
The joint operation between Stock Theft and K9 Units across the province, recovered 19 cattle, 25 goats and 10 sheep in the Northern KwaZulu-Natal area. Police sources said the operation targeted wanted stock thieves and non-compliant stock owners.
The operation encompassed areas including Ezakheni, Elandslaagte, Van Reenen and more, during which 22 suspects were arrested for stock theft related cases.
Countless others were fined for not complying with the Animal Identification Act. “Such operations will be continuously conducted to curb the theft of livestock in the province of KZN,” said provincial SAPS spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane in a statement.
“We urge livestock owners to properly brand their livestock for speedy identification purposes and also take necessary precautions to safeguard their livestock whilst grazing. We commend the substantial recovery of the stolen livestock and arrest of the suspects,” added Provincial Commissioner of SAPS KZN, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
Provincial MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu applauded the operation. He described the success of the joint operation as ‘commendable work’, stating it clearly demonstrated what could be achieved through cooperation between the community, SAPS and voluntary crime fighting organisations.
“Stock has a high emotional value and attachment for many rural families, and is the most valued asset that keeps homesteads going.”
He said stock theft had the potential to trigger conflict and plunge the province into a war.
“It is on this basis that the Department has prioritised stock theft and mobilised communities against this scourge.”
In conclusion, he urged residents to ensure livestock was correctly numbered and branded, promising more operations of this kind were on the cards.
