Ladysmith police recently solved three cases within 24 hours before the complainants were even aware that the crimes had been committed.
The first arrest was made in Egerton Road on Tuesday, October 15, when police spotted two suspects acting suspiciously. Police stopped them and after searching their bags, they found stolen taps and fixtures in their possession. It is alleged that the suspects broke into a vacant house in the area and stole the items. The suspects, aged 20 and 30, were arrested and charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property.
In another incident on Wednesday, Ladysmith police arrested two suspects (aged 14 and 41) who were found to be in possession of stolen mountain bicycles. The members were conducting a crime prevention operation when they spotted the suspects in possession of the bicycles. When police questioned the two, it was found that they had stolen the bicycles in Stevenson Road, where they had been chained to a carport.
The police officers then went to a taxi rank in Lyell Street, where they arrested two suspects (aged 19 and 20) who were found to be in possession of cosmetics which were allegedly stolen during a business burglary in Murchison Street. It is alleged that the suspects broke into the premises and stole the items. They were arrested and charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property and burglary.
All six suspects are expected to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court soon. KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised Ladysmith police officers for their vigilance. “We request members of the community to be our eyes and ears and to report suspicious activities to the police. We need criminals to know they cannot expect members of the community to turn a blind eye to unlawful behaviour and accept the crimes they commit,” she said.
