Police arrested three suspects shortly after an attempted carjacking in Acaciavale on Tuesday night.
A call came in about a shooting incident in Orchid Street, Acaciavale, just before 8.30pm. On arrival, police found that hijackers had tried to steal a Toyota Tazz and the owner of the car had been shot in the left leg. The suspects fled with only the car keys.
A search of nearby veld turned up a Golf with two occupants (aged 19 and 20) inside. The Golf had false registration plates and no licence disc. Nearby, they also found a person hiding in the bushes. It is believed that the suspects intended to use the Golf as a getaway vehicle. The three were arrested.
Police are investigating the possibility that the vehicle may be stolen. The two occupants of the Golf face charges of possession of suspected stolen property, while the third arrested suspect (aged 29) faces charges of attempted murder and robbery. Police are also investigating a link between the third suspect and carjacking incidents in Hillcrest, Bergville and Ladysmith, the latter earlier this month. Two other suspects are still at large. During the arrests, three cell-phones were seized.
The suspects are set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court soon.
