A pensioner from the Rookdale area of Bergville was viciously assaulted and killed by her grandson on Monday last week.
The 33-year-old grandson hit his 75-year-old grandmother over the head with an axe. The old woman sustained severe head injuries and was taken to Emmaus Hospital by family members. She died of her injuries the following day.
Police were informed of the incident, but in the interim the suspect was also severely assaulted by community members and admitted to hospital. He was later transferred to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg in a serious condition.
The motive for the attack on the grandmother is alleged to be that the grandson was trying to get his hands on her pension money.
The deceased has not yet been officially identified and Bergville police are investigating a case of murder.
