Municipal Manager TP Biyela has confirmed that the mayoral Audi Q7 was involved in an accident while on an official trip to Durban on October 18.
Mr Biyela said he was also in Durban but had travelled in his own vehicle to attend the same meeting ‘related to municipal affairs’.
After the meeting concluded, he later received a call from Mayor Thulani Mahaye who told him that the Q7 had been hit from behind by another vehicle.
“The car was travelling towards Pietermaritzburg on N3 and was hit by a van from behind,” Mr Biyela told the Courier.
“It was around 6pm and was raining heavily. The police attended to the scene and I also attended.” The impact caused the Audi to crash into the vehicle travelling in front. There was extensive damage to both the rear and front of the mayoral car.
The car was then towed to Pieternaritzburg and from Pieternaritzburg to Dundee.
“The Mayor was with his driver and the bodyguard at the time of the accident. The other vehicle was at fault.”
