The man arrested for the rape of an 83-year-old grandmother in Volkrust is now being investigated for raping and killing two other women of the same age.
According to the granddaughter of the most recent victim, the attacker lay in wait in the grandmother’s laundry room, which is attached to the main building and accessed from the kitchen.
When she opened the door to the laundry room at 8.00 that morning, he slammed it back into her face, causing her to fall back into the kitchen. He began choking her where she lay on the kitchen floor until she was barely conscious and then raped her.
Police sources revealed that evidence has been discovered that may link the man to the rape of another elderly woman, which was reported in November last year. It is believed that the victim told her granddaughter what had happened to her before she passed away from her injuries.
A third case was reported in April, and the 84-year-old victim, while unable to remember the face of her attacker, remembered the jacket he wore and was able to describe it in detail. A jacket matching that description was discovered in the suspect’s possession.
He appeared at the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when the docket was sent to the Department of Public Prosecutors, which will decide on a high court date.
The man has also been charged with the double murder of Volksrust couple Emejean Brussouw and Dhalip Mohabir, as well as for the rape of Miss Brussouw. The couple’s mutilated bodies were discovered already in a state of decomposition on July 5, six days after they were allegedly tortured and killed with garden instruments.
