The rebirth of Kameelkop Lodge, Wasbank Valley

Initial plans are to proceed on a trial and test basis, and to revisit the whole scheme a year later. The objective is eco-tourism, on a partnership basis with the local community

Kameelkop Lodge, situated in the Wasbank Valley, from the Wasbank turnoff, has been given a new lease on life when three local Dundee entrepeneurs, Peter Ruddle, Chris Gunter and Tyrone Milne had been been granted a lease from the Boschoek Community Trust to take over the management of the lodge. A signing ceremony was held on Friday, November 29, where nKosi Kunene, from the local community, to whom the Kameelkop property belongs, signed the lease giving the three men the go-ahead to start operations at Kameelkop.

Initial plans are to proceed on a trial and test basis, and to revisit the whole scheme a year later. The objective is eco-tourism, on a partnership basis with the local community. First of all the lodge will have to be upgraded to its former glory, to make it economically viable, and to present a graded level of accommodation and entertainment to visitors.

Peter also said that they are planning work on the original Kameelkop house as well, which will be used for staff purposes.

Introduction of zebra is envisaged, with other animal species as well, when compatibility with local conditions allows it.  There are only three chalets functional at this point in time, but introductory special offers will be made available to South Africans when the lodge is ready to accommodate visitors on a larger scale.
