A man was arrested on the N3 outside Ladysmith on Christmas Eve for defeating the ends of justice.
An Isuzu bakkie travelling in the southbound carriageway was flagged down by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials outside Ladysmith, but the driver failed to stop. The vehicle was pursued and stopped a short distance away.
The reason the vehicle was initially flagged down was because the front number plate was not visible. After stopping the bakkie, the RTI officers found that the number plate had been covered with a plastic packet.
On questioning the 35-year-old driver concerning the ‘cover-up’, the man failed to give a reasonable explanation. The officers suspected that the driver had covered up the number plate in an attempt to evade traffic cameras, and arrested him for defeating the ends of justice.
The accused appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court the same day and was released on bail. He is due to appear in court again on Friday (January 10).
