Dagga bust in Keate Street

The drugs weighed in at 234kg with a street value of about R230,000

Public Safety  officers made a dagga bust while conducting a roadblock in Keate Street yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

Public Safety were assisted by Ladysmith Crime Intelligence & Protection Services, as well as Visible Policing and K9 officers. It was about 5.45pm when a bakkie approached the roadblock. The vehicle came to a stop and suddenly, to the officers’ surprise, three men jumped out and fled on foot. Public Safety officers gave chase and arrested a 37-year-old suspect in Alexandra Street.

A search of the bakkie turned up 26 bags of dagga. Police impounded the vehicle and the dagga was taken to the police station. The drugs weighed in at 248.3kg with a street value of about R230,000.

This is one of the biggest dagga busts made by Public Safety.

The arrested suspect appeared in court on Friday and the case was remanded until January 14. Police are in the process of tracing the two men who got away.

Update: Emnambithi/Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala would like to congratulate the municipal Public Safety officers on the great work they did on Thursday during the roadblock. “Because of their consistent good work, the dagga bust saw an arrest and confiscation of dagga, and this town and many others are grateful.” The mayor is most proud of the Public Safety officers who perform their daily duties with determination and excellence. Their great work does not go unnoticed.
