Frustrated that their calls for assistance went unheard, some residents who do business in Alexandra Street took matters into their own hands.
They heaped mounds of filth, which had been removed from the gutters onto the road.
One of the residents said that many people had reported to Umtshezi Municipality that the gutters need to be cleaned out.
Days turned into weeks and the manhole at the corner of the street inevitably became blocked.
An oily layer covered the smelly water that was now standing in the gutter.
On Thursday morning, December 19, some of the residents cleaned out the drains and dumped the contents on the road.
This was their defiant message to the municipality, whom they hoped wouldn’t turn a blind eye.
