Memel road meeting paves the way
This meeting is scheduled for January 23 in Bloemfontein.
After years of being hounded for answers, the Free State government is ready to put its cards on the table.
Numerous articles, phone calls, emails and online petitions can no longer be ignored, evident from officials finally agreeing to a formal meeting regarding the state of the R34 Memel road.
This meeting is scheduled for January 23 in Bloemfontein.
Forming the delegation travelling to the Free State from Newcastle will be businessmen, Johan Pieters, Christo van der Vyver and Nico Oosthuizen, portfolio councillor for Development Planning and Human Settlements, Matthew Shunmugam and ANC Emahlangeni Region chairman, Arthur Zwane.
At this meeting, the future of the R34, which links Vrede, Memel and Newcastle, will be discussed in depth.
“The delegation will issue a press release directly after the meeting,” Mr Pieters promised.
News of the meeting is in stark contrast to the proposed plan devised by Mr Pieters and Mr van der Vyver, to purchase an advertisement in a popular Sunday newspaper, appealing for the Free State government to intervene.
Mr Pieters said they also planned to write an open letter to the National MEC of Transport, Dipuo Peters.
Hope is the meeting between delegates from both the Free State government and Newcastle will mark the beginning of a positive new chapter in the bloody history of the R34 Memel road.
UPDATE: According to Mr Pieters, the meeting in Bloemfontein has been positive. A statement will be released tomorrow.
