Behind bars for raping his grandmother

The name of the rapist is withheld in order to protect the identity of the grandmother.

A man was recently sentenced to 12 years behind bars after being convicted of raping his 80-year-old grandmother.

The incident took place in March last year in the Emmaus area. The 32-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after raping his biological grandmother during a fit of rage after allegedly consuming alcohol.

The rape happened at the grandmother’s residence and was witnessed by another family member. The case docket was investigated by Warrant Officer Bhekizitha M Dube of the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

Bail was opposed by the investigating officer and the accused remained in custody until he was sentenced in the Ladysmith Regional Court recently.
