R10 000 worth of dagga was uprooted from Colita on Thursday.
Local traffic officers received an anonymous tip off about the flourishing growth and the officers proceeded to Colita where they uprooted the plants by hand.
“The dagga weighed approximately 50 kilograms with an approximate street value of R10 000.
This load was burnt at the waste site with the assistance of the fire department. Our message to the public is that future raids will be ongoing in our fight against drugs and other illegal substances,” commented Umtshezi Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko.
She added that traffic officers had also revived the scholar patrol project.
“Officer Nafisa Gunkel has been tasked to champion this. Various schools were visited by Officers Gunkel and Scheepers and the project works well at certain schools whereas other school challenges have been identified,” Ms Njoko concluded.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, January 26, at approximately 11am members of the Upper Tugela Borderline Control were doing crime prevention related activities in the Emmaus area of Bergville.
The police officers were passing through the Thunzini area when they noticed a dagga plantation alongside a homestead.
The plantation is estimated to yield approximately two tons of dagga, which when dried will be valued at about R500 000.
A 44-year-old woman was arrested and has been charged with cultivating dagga.
She appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 27.
Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, commended the members for the arrest of a suspect and recovery of dagga plants.
“We pride ourselves with this arrest and seizure of dagga plants is another success stride in our endeavours of fighting drug use and illicit drug trade,” said Ms Ngobeni.
