Some councillors harshly criticised the municipality’s report on the progress of their Key Priority Areas, which was presented at Wednesday’s council meeting.
The Municipal Turnaround Strategy – Key Priority Areas, as explained by Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko, is a tool used to measure the municipality’s progress.
The turnaround has expanded over the months and now consists of 23 key priority areas, which are assigned to each municipal department.
The Civil Department came under the severe criticism when several councillors pointed out incorrect information.
Councillors argued that projects like the Umgwenya Bridge and Umgwamama grave road were not 97 percent and 100 percent completed respectively.
PR Councillor Alpheus Vilakazi related that he had been at the Madondo Bridge site on Tuesday and contrary to the report stating that it was 95 percent complete, the project had not started yet.
The Municipal Turnaround Strategy also indicated that repairs to potholes in the central business district were 80 percent complete.
This was contested by councillors who said it was plain to see that this was incorrect.
In response, Mr Khumalo from the Civil Department said the figure was indicative of repairs completed in November and December.
Other Key Priority Areas that councillors questioned were the incentives/bonuses for traffic officers, waste management and purchase of heavy-duty (yellow) equipment.
