The antics of five hapless burglars have earned them the unofficial title of ‘Newcastle’s Dumbest Criminals’.
Police and traffic officials on patrol during the early hours of February 6, arrested the bumbling burglars after noticing their efforts to load a safe they had stolen from a CBD business a few hours earlier, into their vehicle.
While the safe was far too large to fit into the getaway vehicle, the matter was made more absurd because the burglars were in possession of both a duplicate key and R40 000 in cash obtained from the unlocked safe.
The five burglars were arrested and charged for their efforts.
The five accused, between the ages of 19 and 33, appeared in court on Monday, and police investigations continue.
The officials responsible for the arrests were thanked publicly via local Crime Watch forums.
