The municipality is in the dark about an illegal dumping site on Kirkland Street.
Multiple sources within the municipality have admitted they know little of the dump near the Masonic Lodge, which includes large heaps of building rubble, garden refuse and discarded household items.
This has resulted in an increase in vagrants and the destitute combing the refuse for something useable.
Despite more than two weeks given for response by the municipality regarding ownership of the land and whispers of proposed development, no comment was forthcoming.
However, confidential sources called the dump an eye sore and a poor image for the suburb.
“The municipality is losing control of the situation,” the source exclaimed.
While part of the land was reportedly donated to a nearby church and a portion proposed for a driving range, residents remain fearful of flooding in the early parts of each year.
A number of suggestions were given in this regard.
The source mentioned flooding and its subsequent damage could be lessened by levelling the area and terracing with grass, perhaps creating a recreational area similar to the Trim Park.
He also talked of dredging the Jordan River, to create water sport facilities such as rowing.
“If it floods, there will be minimal damages.”
The source also touched briefly on the importance of involving the private sector, although the Department of Water’s Adopt-A-River project had been successful.
