The Dundee Regional Court
sentenced a 31-year-old man, Sigwili
Zama Mncube, to 25 years behind
bars for raping a 32-year-old mentally
challenged man.
Mncube was sentenced last
Thursday after the court heard how he
raped his 32-year-old victim in April
2012.
The man, who resides in Osizweni,
had attended a funeral at Silutshana,
Nquthu area.
The funeral proceedings were
delayed and only commenced the next
day, which allowed the suspect to take
advantage of the situation. He offered
the victim a bed for the night at his
homestead and the victim agreed.
While in bed the accused started
raping the man, who was unable to
leave and could only report the matter
the next morning to a neighbour. The
police were summoned and a case of
rape was opened at the Nquthu police
station for further investigation.
The matter was then handed over
to Dundee Family Violence, Child
Protection and Sexual Offences Unit
and placed in the capable hands of Lt
NNE Zulu, who investigated and saw
the matter through to court. Positive
medical reports and DNA results
played a vital role in securing this
sentence. Provincial Commissioner
Lieutenant General Mmamonnye
Ngobeni applauded the success and
accomplishment, and expressed her
confi dence in the judicial system,
which meted out a fi tting sentence to
this rapist.
“People such as Mncube deserve
no place in our society. The sentence
handed down will send a clear
message to like-minded would-be
offenders that the police will trace,
arrest and successfully prosecute them,she said.
