People are warned to beware of ATM scans doing the rounds in Ladysmith.
One person was recently targeted at a local shopping centre. A man was using an ATM when he noticed someone acting suspiciously nearby. Once the man had withdrawn his money, the suspicious-looking individual approached him and insisted that the money belonged to him. A heated argument ensued and the man did not relinquish the money he had drawn out.
In another incident, a woman using the ATMs at another shopping centre found that R80 was still in the money holder. Confused, she asked people standing nearby if it belonged to them. No one claimed the money, so the woman handed it in at centre management. It is not known if this incident was some sort of scam or merely a case of someone forgetting to take their money.
Police say that people should be extra cautious when using ATMs in town. If you are unsure of how to use an ATM, contact a bank representative for help. Do not let a stranger help you, as it may be a set-up and you could end up being the victim of a scam.
