A suspected hijacker was shot dead by police during a high-speed chase on Saturday evening.
Earlier, two women had been hijacked and their Prado vehicle and trailer taken after they slowed down for speed bumps on Oldacre Street, near the Victoria Street intersection, shortly after 6:30pm.
Police said the women, whose names were not released but who were driving an Ixopo-registered (NIX) vehicle, were stopped by a man who threatened them with a firearm.
The gunman ordered the women out of the car. He then climbed into the vehicle and sped off in the direction of the Nyanyadu road.
Members of the Glencoe Dog Unit responded immediately and gave chase.
A shoot-out ensued, with police returning fire and fatally wounding the hijacker. The vehicle crashed and overturned.
The gunman was identified as Bononqaba Mchunu (40). Police declined to divulge further details.
Residents have called for security cameras to put be installed in Dundee to help quell growing incidents of crime, especially in and around the central business district.
