On February 26, at the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, three suspects, aged 24 and 25 were sentenced to life long imprisonment for robberies with aggravating circumstances, rape and attempted murder.
“They attacked a man and his girlfriend. When he escaped, they took the girl to long grass next to a school and repeatedly took turns raping her,” said Captain Shooz Magudulela from Corporate Communications in Newcastle.
The girl knew one of the suspects and the fear of being caught took over. They slit her throat and thinking she was dead, they ran away.
To everyone’s surprise, she wasn’t murdered. She woke up, closed the wound with her hands and made her way to a friends’ house.
Police Crime Intelligence Gathering Services and Officer Constable Thulasizwe Gladman Mbhele decided that justice will be served and it was.
The suspects were all charged with 15 years imprisonment for armed robbery, 15 years for attempted murder and life long imprisonment for rape.
