Pupils released after beating classmate to death

In 2013, pupils witnessed a fellow classmate being beaten to death by his peers.

This year, only four months after the attack, the seven offenders have been released on bail.

On October 28, the 17-year-old Bongani Nkabinde from Sizimisele High School in Dannhauser was beaten to death by a group of boys with knobkieries at school. Bongani later died in his father’s arms, with multiple wounds and injuries.

On the day of the assault, a video of the vicious attack went viral, and only 24 hours after the incident, four suspects were arrested, with three more suspects arrested the next day. The video received more than 3 000 views on YouTube, and jaws are still dropping when this video is viewed.

Speculation around the reason for the attack still continues. At the time, family members believed the reason for the attack was because of jealousy.

“Bongani was a very good traditional dancer and belonged to a group called Abaphumeleli. This group often travelled the country and their rival group didn’t like this,” said Priscilla Makhoba, Bongani’s grandmother. Other sources believed that this fight might have started because of a girl.

Circumstances surrounding the release of the suspects are murky, however, a court date has been set for later this month.
