The pesky traffic lights at the Karellandman/Gray Street intersection at the Dundee Boulevard Centre entrance have been a source of irritation to motorists for months.
The lights are more off than on, and motorists have had to negotiate a tricky four-way stop which, with trucks thundering through, has proved to be more than many drivers can handle. While criticism has been directed at the municipality, the robots are the responsibility of the Department of Transport – as are the traffic lights at the entrance to the town, adjacent to the testing grounds. Traffic Chief Mandla Ndlovu said the DoT appointed contractors from out of town to maintain the traffic lights. It can take up to three weeks before the contractors come up to Dundee. The Courier understands that the contractors installed their own controlling system, and were supposed to send municipal technicians on a course before the lights were handed to the municipality. However, this never happened, and with the lights in the state they are it is doubtful if the municipality would even like to take over.
