Municipal employees returned to work last week, cleaning the CBD after an illegal strike, and following a strict warning from the Newcastle Municipality.
The strike was condemned by municipal management, however, disgusted residents watched as the CBD was completely trashed.
Information has now come to light which alleges that trade unions have given the municipality a date for middle next month to deal with the issues raised through the protests. The exact date could not be confirmed, although it is believed that workers will keep to their promise to go on strike again if the solutions offered by the municipality are not to their satisfaction.
“We remain confident that these workers will soon realise that we negotiate in nothing but good faith,” said Mayor of Newcastle, Afzul Rehman during his State of the Town and Budget address last week. “We care for and love our employees as much as we do every citizen of this town.”
Cllr Rehman assured residents that the workers would return to work and return the town to the “beautiful city that we are”.
Many streets in the suburbs still have piles of refuse littering the pavements, however, workers have begun to systematically clear all areas as per the normal collection schedule.
