Fishermen outraged by competency test legislation

“Many claim to be experts but how many really know their barbel from their carp. "

Fishermen are up in arms over news that, just like firearm owners, they too are going to be subject to a barrage of red tape, including a competency test.
Fishermen will be limited to owning only one rod per household.
A spokesperson for the Environmental Department said it is a ‘known fact that fishing stocks are under pressure in South Africa and more must be done to protect this natural resource’.
“We have seen fishermen already complaining about over fishing at Chelmsford dam. Environmental officers will be out inspecting all those who have applied for a licence to ensure that excess rods are handed in to the nearest police station for destruction.”
He also revealed that fishermen are to undergo competency tests.
“Many claim to be experts but how many really know their barbel from their carp. Tests will be done to ensure these fishermen know their environment. People need to know stuff like that. It’s like a firearm license – people need to be competent.”
Another spokesman said casting competency tests would also be conducted before a license is issued.
“We may even using a shooting range where applicants can test themselves by casting onto a target like a cut-out shark or something.”
Fishermen who spoke to the Courier said they were outraged and predicted mass protests.
“Some fishermen will simply pack in the sport and stick to fish fingers. I mean who has the time to do all those tests?,’” asked one fisherman, who only identified himself as Irate Mike.
