Municipalities are graded according to a formula including their populations and total income, and salaries are determined accordingly. Government Gazette No 37281, dated January 29, sets out these upper limits for salaries and allowances.

Councils are under no obligation to take the upper limit, although AbaQulusi councillors always have.

Council has to adopt a motion to accept these upper limits, and did so at its meeting on February 12. The final approval comes from the KZN Provincial Government.

AbaQulusi Municipality is a Grade 4 municipality. As such its councillors will receive the following total remuneration packages, back dated to July 1 last year.

The Mayor – R703, 801 per annum.

The Speaker and Deputy Mayor – R563,040 per annum.

Executive Committee members – R527,851 per annum.

MoneyOther Part-time councillors – R211,140 per annum.
