Potholes make for dangerous dirt road

It is sometimes safer to leave the road completely and drive on the grass, say motorists

The P555 dirt road near Elandslaagte is in a terrible state. It is full of potholes the size of craters and at certain parts in the road, there is only enough space for one car to drive. It is sometimes safer to leave the road completely and drive on the grass, say motorists.

Recent heavy rain saw the road becoming very muddy and vehicles drove through while still in this state. Huge cracks have since appeared in the road surface. Staff at Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve say they have been reporting this problem for awhile now, but no one seems interested in fixing up the road.

Guests at the reserve have also complained about the condition of the road, especially since they drive cars and not big bakkies or land cruisers that are better able to tackle the rough terrain. “The road is so bad you need to slow down to 20km/h and even then there’s a chance of damaging your car. This is just terrible and the municipality needs to do something fast!” complained one resident.

At the time of going to press, the municipality had failed to comment.
