The Endumeni Traffic Department has commenced with the renewing of street name boards as well as renewing road markings.
Mandla Ndlovu, Chief Traffic Officer in Endumeni, explained that the municipality has already bought street name boards for ward 2 and some for ward 3 in Glencoe and these will soon be erected..
Last week the road maintenance team marked the McKenzie and Gladstone Street four way street and will soon begin with Colley/Gladstone Streets.
With the shortage of staff, this work might take longer than expected as the small road maintenance team has to ‘kill to birds with one stone’ by marking the roads as well as putting up road signs and street names.
Mr Ndllovu and his general workers in the department appealed to the public to take care of these road signs because there are there to help them.
SD Gumede, road marking supervisor, remarked that “these signs are paid by the community, as rate payers so they must take care of them and discipline they children not to vandalise the signs.”
Mr Gumede said the department had improved the signs as these ones are made of steel to minimise the possibility of having them removed. Putting up street signs will be a relief to Glencoe and Sithembile residents – especially those travelling by public transport to make it easy for drivers to identify streets names as there has been cases where some of the drivers do not know the streets, especially in Glencoe town.
