Several factories are operating in the area, apparently contributing to the problem. One of the factory owners, Razia Cassim, said maggots and fruit flies were affecting her business.
“I have been here since last December and the municipality has not once picked up the rubbish. I do not even know what days they collect the rubbish and I usually organise with my transport to have it removed and taken to the dump,” said a very disgusted Mrs Cassim.
“While I can get people to remove it, why must I when the municipality is being paid for it?” she asked.
Danny Yu, the landlord of the complex, explained the biggest problem was that the rubbish was not collected by the municipality on a regular basis.
“They are supposed to be coming twice a week, but they aren’t.” Mr Yu suggested that the premises should be supplied with a larger skip. The removal of rubbish would be easier, and rubbish would not have to pile on the ground. Alex Liu, another business owner on the premises, added that the Chinese Chamber of Business had lodged a complaint regarding the matter.
“The municipality did respond and after the first strike, municipal employees worked until 9pm cleaning the area, which is impressive.”
The Municipality’s Communications Department was asked for comment, but Zandile Masondo from the department failed to do so at the time of going to press.
