Residents in Paradise have found themselves with an altogether ‘holey’ problem in their suburb.
At the junction between Sutherland and Finnemore streets, and a few other streets near the Paradise Sports Grounds, residents have been forced to accept a series of gaping holes in the pavements outside their homes.
For these residents, it is the latest in a list of concerns the municipality is yet to provide explanations for.
With questions from residents piling up, the only information which could be gleaned from municipal sources was that the hole on Sutherland Street was created to access a burst water pipe.
More than two weeks later, the gaping chasm remains.
A resident living nearby, explained since workers began digging the massive hole on Sutherland Street, her household had been without running water for close to a week.
Tied into that, is an overflowing manhole at the apex of the corner.
“We have complained about this so many times – this is raw sewage. When people drive by, there is a huge stench and we can’t even open the windows.”
The resident added there were a few malfunctioning street lights, and the area was continually without power.
“We have been given no explanation for what is happening here.”
For residents the next street up, similar problems abound.
Those who own homes on Montague Street and Lacerta Place have blamed ongoing repair work for sporadic power supply in the area, another project which has left residents literally in the dark.
Only once speaking directly with workers, was it revealed a pipe was being unearthed for maintenance.
In order to address the concerns of Paradise residents, and to understand the official reason behind the earthworks, the municipal Communications Unit and the mayor, Afzul Rehman were contacted.
To date, emails in this regard have gone unanswered.
“The roads are getting worse now. Even less information is forthcoming – I guess the man on the street is not as important as the municipality leads residents to believe,” concluded another incensed resident.
