Cable thieves have struck again in parts of the central business district and Forderville.
Approximately 280 meters of cable has been stolen since June 2 and this has been reported in Brokensha Road, De Waal Drive, Odendaal Road, Gladiola and Jennings roads, Albert Street and parts of Forderville.
Umtshezi Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko confirmed that in addition to the stolen cable, which is valued at about R10 000, six poles were cut down and six light fittings damaged, the cost of this amounts to R15 000.
It is believed that the cable thieves cut down the poles and drop the cable to the ground, in other instances they pull down on the poles so it slants and then cut the cable when it is accessible.
The communities feel the negative effects.
“Street lighting in these areas is being affected because the replacement is taking far longer. The poles, cables and fittings are on back order, some have a delivery date of 24 weeks,” said Ms Njoko. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to police on 036 342 9525.
