Two injured in four-car collision
A pedestrian and one motorist were treated for serious injuries, following the smash.
Two people were injured in a four-car collision on Allen Street near the Newcastle Mall this afternoon (June 20).
According to witnesses, they saw a vehicle first collide with another car near the Mall’s middle entrance, before ploughing through the busy Oak Avenue intersection, striking a pedestrian and two other cars. The initial vehicle came to rest at the end of the concrete median a few hundred metres on.
“The pedestrian was hit and dragged for a few metres, before rolling to a stop,” said a shocked onlooker.
Paramedics confirmed the pedestrian had suffered a compound fracture of the ankle, and added they had also treated one of the motorists for a head laceration from colliding with the windshield.
Although the driver of the initial car tested positive for alcohol, he was determined to be under the legal limit. However, police sources said they would refer to CCTV footage, driver testimonies and witness reports when investigating the matter, before determining whether a charge of reckless and negligent driving would be laid.
The driver admitted he had inexplicably blacked out shortly before the collision.
