Youth Day ‘stink’ at Provincial Hospital
One source alleged that hospital staff showed no concern about the sewage leak.
Raw sewage flooded the Newcastle Provincial Hospital last week. According to sources, while the sewage did not flood the interior of the hospital, the negative impact of the leak could not be ignored.
According to a source, who wished to remain anonymous, one of the main causes of concern about the spillage was that it had been allowed to flow freely, with staff apparently showing little concern.
Sabelo Buthelezi, hospital spokesperson, said the blockage had emanated from a manhole under the wards, but the matter had since been attended to by the hospital maintenance team.
“The hospital is being renovated in order to be accredited to implement NHI and to improve health outcomes,” explained Mr Buthelezi. “We therefore ask our patients and relatives to exercise patience while these upgrades are completed.”
He added that refurbishments at Newcastle Provincial Hospital had already begun in order comply with national core standards.
“ We sincerely apologise to all our clients and patients, who in one way or another were affected and inconvenienced by this incident,” concluded Mr Buthelezi.
