Memel road under construction
"Community members of Memel awoke to construction vehicles and companies looking for accommodation for construction workers the past week," said Mr Pieters.

Construction on the R34 Memel Road has begun in earnest.
This according to Johan Pieters of Champ Marketing; the team behind the petition of recent years.
“Community members of Memel awoke to construction vehicles and companies looking for accommodation for construction workers the past week,” said Mr Pieters.
The reason for this, he continued, was because the reconstruction of the road had finally begun.
“Over the years, many people were victims of accidents on the notorious road; some losing tyres and others, their loved ones. We started trying to get the attention of the government almost six years ago.”
On January 24, a delegation flew to Bloemfontein to meet with the Head of Department for Police, Roads and Transport, Sandile Msibi.
“The delegation consisted of Nico Oosthuizen, Arthur Zwane, Cllr Matthew Shunmugam, Christo van der Vyver and myself. Both parties, Newcastle business and the Newcastle Municipality and the Free State province delivered presentations on the state of the R34 Memel Road.”
At the time, Mr Msibi promised the delegation he would ensure the reconstruction was in order for the road to be safe for all to travel on.
“Today we can report that Miletus Consulting (Pty) Ltd from Harrismith was appointed as the consulting company and TAU PELE Construction (Pty) Ltd from Bloemfontein was appointed as the contractors to ensure that the R34 Memel Road will be reconstructed to a safe road for all to travel on,” added Mr Pieters.
The community was further requested to bear with the reconstruction. “We would like to request the community not to get upset when they need to stop at Stop and
Go signs on the road but to celebrate with all of us “ said Mr Pieters.
He concluded by thanking Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman and his team for participating in the internal processes of ensuring the reconstruction.
