Municipal workers to strike again
The planned mass action will be only the beginning, and the groups will not stop until they are able to defeat the 'tenderprenueship' and corruption found in the Newcastle Municipality.
Residents of Newcastle have been called to march in solidarity with municipal workers as they hand over a mandate to the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Senzo Mchunu.
Although an interdict from the labour court has stopped the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) workers from continuing strikes, District Manager of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Mafika Ndebele, explained why a strike would be taking place on Friday.
During a press conference earlier today, it was reported that the strike would encompass the SACP, SAMWU and Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) joining forces against the African National Congress (ANC) led-municipality which ironically, SACP and COSATU politically support.
“The ongoing malpractices of this municipality has forced us to act,” Mr Ndebele explained.
Seven buses have been made available to ferry community members and municipal workers who wish to participate in the strike to the assembly point on the corner of Albert Wessels Drive and Allen Street, from 8am until the start of the strike at 10am.
Businesspeople from the affected areas, Allen and Scott Street, are requested to attend the stakeholders meeting scheduled for 9am tomorrow (July 3) morning at the Room 230 on the second floor of the Nedbank Building.
