Farhana Kaloo’s family lash out at private hospital
Hospital staff then told Mr Kaloo he needed R8000 for further treatment to be administered
A postmortem has found that Farhana Kaloo died of natural causes.
Her sudden death on Wednesday sent shock waves throughout Ladysmith.
The Ladysmith Gazette interviewed the family of the deceased this morning (Friday).
Farhana worked at La Verna Hospital for 4 years in the theatre department.
The family says she felt sick on Wednesday afternoon and phoned her husband to tell him. She visited a doctor the previous day, who evidently told her she had a stomach bug. By Wednesday, her condition had worsened.
Mr Kaloo rushed home to see how his wife was doing on Wednesday afternoon and seeing that she was terribly ill, he immediately rushed her to La Verna Hospital.
On arrival, staff allegedly demanded that Mr Kaloo pay R850 to put Farahana on a drip. Once Mr Kaloo had paid the amount, Farhana was put on a drip. According to the family, the staff then told Mr Kaloo he needed R8000 for further treatment to be administered.
Mr Kaloo did not have the money at that time. Consequently, the family say the hospital staff put Farhana into a wheelchair and told her husband to take her to the Provincial Hospital.
Mr Kaloo rushed his sick wife to the Provincial Hospital. Farhana died shortly after arrival.
Farhana died several hours later while being treated by provincial hospital staff.
La Verna Hospital confirmed that the patient was treated in their casualty department and given intravenous treatment.
In an angry response, the family has lashed out at the hospital.
“I am very disappointed with the staff and management of La Verna Hospital. My wife worked there for so many years and for her to get treatment like this was unacceptable and very sad,” says Mr Kaloo.
Farhana leaves behind her husband and two children.
