Will Oom Jannie find new wheels?

The community of Newcastle is once again proving that through unity, good deeds can be done to better the lives of others.

On the morning of June 28, pensioner Jannie Venter watched in dismay as his car went up in flames, in a freak accident.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown, and Oom Jannie and his wife Baby are now stuck without transport. According to members of the family, it was lucky he wasn’t in the car at the time.

“My father-in-law is a pensioner, and with their little bit of money they can’t afford another car,” said Lynette Venter, the driving force behind a campaign to gather the funds needed to get Oom Jannie new wheels. “My mother-in-law bakes cakes to earn some extra income, and they need a car to get around.”

“Every time I speak to him, and he lifts his glasses and wipes away a tear, my heart breaks,” she said.

Lynette, along with family, friends and fellow church members have managed to band together and pool funds.

“Everyone contributed what they could, and we also got some money from selling the burnt out car for scrap metal,” said Mrs Venter.

The Venters are now looking for a car being sold privately, at a reasonable price.

“The dealerships in town have nice cars, but not in the price range we are looking for,” she said.
